Air National Guard Senior Airman Ryan H. Moll has deployed to Southwest Asia to serve in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and/or Operation Enduring Freedom. Operation Iraqi Freedom is the official name given to military operations involving members of the U.S. armed forces and coalition forces participating in efforts to free and secure Iraq. Mission objectives focus on force protection, peacekeeping, stabilization, security and counter-insurgency operations as the Iraqi transitional governing bodies assume full sovereign powers to govern the peoples of Iraq. Members from all branches of the U.S. military and multinational forces are also assisting in rebuilding Iraq’s economic and governmental infrastructure, and training and preparing Iraqi military and security forces to assume full authority and responsibility in defending and preserving Iraq’s sovereignty and independence as a democracy. Operation Enduring Freedom is the official name given to anti-terrorism military operations involving U.S. troops and allied coalition partners. Active duty and reserve component members from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces have been deployed to support the war against global terrorism outside the borders of the United States. Air Force Maj. Derek R. Ferland has graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., earning a master’s degree in international affairs. The school is designed to provide relevant and unique advanced education and research programs to increase the combat effectiveness of the U.S. and Allied armed forces, and to enhance the security of the United States. The school provides accredited graduate-level resident education for selected members of the U.S. armed forces, federal civil agency employees, and international military officers and counterpart civilians. Graduate programs include studies in aviation, space, administrative, mathematics, communications, computers, engineering, meteorology, oceanography, sciences, national security affairs, and doctorate degrees in other various and numerous military related career fields. Ferland, a strategic planner with 14 years of military service, is assigned to the Office of Secretary of Defense, Prisoner of War, Missing Persons Affairs, Pentagon, Washington, D.C. He is the son of Mary W. Ferland of Red Water Brook Road, Claremont, N.H., and brother of Kirk H. Ferland of Old Spring Drive, Grantham, N.H. His wife, Dana, is the daughter of Leon E. Jenson of Virginia Drive, Waupaca, Wis., and Jane Jensen of Skyline Drive, Greenville, Wis. The major graduated in 1991 from Stevens High School, Claremont, and received a bachelor’s degree in 1995 from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo. He earned his first master’s degree in 2000 from the Air Force Institute of Technology, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, and earned the latest master’s degree in 2009.

Air Force Master Sgt. James K. Jones graduated and received an associate in applied science degree from the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF). The worldwide college, headquartered at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Ala., awards job-related associate degrees and other credentialing programs to enlisted airmen to enhance mission readiness and support their performance within their career specialty. The education program combines technical and professional military education received in the Air Force with general education provided by civilian institutions. Enlisted members are automatically enrolled in the CCAF and begin earning college credit during basic military training. He received an associate degree in aviation systems technology. Jones, a product improvement manager/quality assurance inspector, is assigned to the 6th Maintenance Group, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. He has served in the military for 16 years. He is the son of Debra C. and Thomas J. Slomski of E. 14th St, Erie, Pa. The master sergeant graduated in 1993 from East High School, Erie.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Anthony P. Evelyn-Watts has graduated from the Vehicle and Vehicular Equipment Maintenance Apprentice Course at the Naval Base Ventura County, Port Hueneme, Calif. The course is designed to train students to perform vehicle maintenance on military and commercial design special purpose vehicles. These vehicles include general, preventive and specific purpose, base maintenance, heavy construction vehicles, aircraft towing and service equipment vehicles, and vehicular equipment. Antonio W. O’Brien has been specifically identified for early promotion to senior airman in the U.S. Air Force. The airman was awarded the new rank ahead of other Air Force members by a “Below-The-Zone” promotion board, which considered the airman’s time in grade, time in service, job performance, military knowledge, bearing, exceptional qualifications, self-improvement efforts, and best overall record. The Below-the-Zone program provides an opportunity for exceptionally well-qualified airman first class to a one-time consideration for promotion to senior airman six months prior to the fixed fully-qualified phase point. Air Force Lt. Col. Thomas P. Sherman has graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., earning a master’s degree in national security affairs and international relations. The school is designed to provide relevant and unique advanced education and research programs to increase the combat effectiveness of the U.S. and Allied armed forces, and to enhance the security of the United States. The school provides accredited graduate-level resident education for selected members of the U.S. armed forces, federal civil agency employees, and international military officers and counterpart civilians. Graduate programs include studies in aviation, space, administrative, mathematics, communications, computers, engineering, meteorology, oceanography, sciences, national security affairs, and doctorate degrees in other various and numerous military related career fields. Sherman has served in the military for 14 years. He is the son of Tom and Mary Ann Sherman of Palomar Drive, Corona, Calif. The colonel graduated in 1991 from Norco Senior High School, Calif., and received a bachelor’s degree in 1995 from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo. Sherman earned his first master’s degree in 2004 from California State University, San Bernardino, and earned the latest master’s degree in 2009.

Operation Iraqi Freedom is the official name given to military operations involving members of the U.S. armed forces and coalition forces participating in efforts to free and secure Iraq. Klarissa A. Garza has joined the United States Air Force under the Delayed Entry Program. The program gives young men and women the opportunity to enlist and delay going into basic military training for up to one year. Qualified men and women are eligible to receive skill training, experience, and up to $20,000 in education benefits. He is the son of Eric Broekhuizen of County Route 25, Oswego, N.Y., and Michelle Broekhuizen of Town Garden Drive, Liverpool, N.Y. Broekhuizen is a 2009 graduate of Oswego High School.
